What is Vision 2030?

Vision 2030 is the City of Lawrence's strategic plan project. Our Strategic Plan is the community roadmap that guides how we serve our community every day. It shapes the outcomes we're working toward, the commitments we make to our residents, and the way we measure whether we're truly making a difference over the next five years.

As Lawrence continues to grow and evolve, it's time to ask an important question:

Are we measuring the things that matter most for the future we're trying to build?

That's exactly what Vision 2030 is designed to help us answer.

Every strategic plan answers four questions:

  1. What do we know to be true about Lawrence today?
  2. What do we hope will be true in the future?
  3. How do we get there?
  4. How will we know we succeeded?

Throughout the summer, our Community Listening team will be out across Lawrence asking questions and listening to your answers. What we hear will shape the plan the City Commission adopts later this year.

The Community Listening Team

One of the things that makes Vision 2030 different is how we're engaging.

Instead of asking our community members to come to City Hall, we're going to you!

This summer, City staff from across various departments are stepping up to be part of our Community Listening Team. You'll find Vision 2030 Community Listeners at the farmers market, concerts, neighborhood events, recreation programs, school events and other places where people naturally gather. Our goal is to hear from people who may never attend a public meeting but have valuable ideas about Lawrence's future.

So what does the Community Listening Team do?

  • They're listeners, not advocates: Team members are there to hear from you, not to decide a particular outcome. Every idea gets captured, whether it's a quick comment or a longer conversation.
  • They create a space to be heard: No appointments needed! Stop by a table, write on a poster or a sticky note, drop a pin on a map of your neighborhood, and move on with your day.
  • They ensure your voice helps shape the plan: Everything gathered is brought back to the project team through our Community Listening Team, summarized, and used to shape the goals and priorities in the new Vision 2030 plan.

How it Comes Together

From listening to a finished plan, Vision 2030 unfolds in stages over the year, building from community input into a plan the City Commission will formally adopt.

Timeline of the project for Vision 2030. July through August is community engagement and the end of 2026 the plan will be drafted and formally adopted.
