KU Gateway Neighborhood Traffic Calming Project Background
During the creation of plans for the KU Gateway developments, a traffic study was performed. It was noted in that traffic study that there are traffic calming concerns and issues in the neighborhoods surrounding campus. In particular, there are issues in the West Hills, University Heights, Raintree, Westwood, Hillcrest, and Oread neighborhoods. The KU Gateway District development contributed $500,000 toward traffic calming in these neighborhoods. This traffic calming project is led by the City but is funded by the KU Gateway development.
Traffic studies indicate that vehicles on streets surrounding campus frequently travel more than 5 mph above the posted 25 mph speed limit. These speeds pose risks to pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.
