The City of Lawrence is committed to enhancing the safety of our neighborhood streets.As part of the 2026 Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP), we’re focusing on three different areas to address concerns about speeding: Harvard Road (from Plymoth to Wakarusa), George Williams Way (from Ken Ridge to Harvard), and Kanza Drive (from Haervard to Wagstaff).

Why Harvard Road, George Williams Way, and Kanza Drive?
Recent traffic studies have shown that vehicles on George Williams Way are often going above 40 mph despite the speed limit being 35 mph. Drivers on Harvard Rd are often going 35 mph despite the speed limit being 25 mph. Kanza Drive scored high during the 2024 evaluation and is being done with this project as it is just 1 speed hump on the one block. These speeds pose risks to pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.
Given its proximity to schools and residential areas, it’s crucial to implement measures that ensure the safety of all road users.
Proposed Solution – Speed Cushions
To mitigate speeding and improve safety, the City is proposing the installation of speed cushions—raised areas of pavement designed to slow down traffic without hindering emergency vehicles or buses. These measures aim to reduce vehicle speeds while maintaining smooth traffic flow.
The City will send mailers to all occupants and owners of homes within 400 feet of the two corridors. Public feedback will be gathered for three weeks after the mailers are sent.
